It is 5 sided with a lid the 5 sides have fine joints and polished smooth edges. You can place it upside down for an enclosed look. It is not waterproof but you can make it waterproof by putting aquarium silicone inside the edges. A thin plastic membrane sheet covers the outside protecting it from scratches.
